It is a terrible reality when someone has to have a Macbook repair or a Macbook screen repair. This type of service means a person has been having ongoing trouble with their computer and finally has to take it in for service. By doing this, the person is going to be without their computer for a couple days or possibly longer. Once someone has to go through the process of computer service or the hassle of having their computer act incorrectly, they will realize the importance of doing four things to guarantee the safety of their information. These four things are backing up their files, backing up their pictures, backing up their music and running regular sweeps of their entire system.
Personal and professional files that are stored on a computer are very important to the creator of the documents. They may be files of household information, address lists, recipes or creative documents. Whatever they are, if they are saved on the hard drive of a system, it is likely that the document holds a higher level of importance. These files should be periodically saved to a disc or a portable hard drive. These additional back up files should be kept in a safe place in case anything should happen to the hard drive. By doing this, the creator of the documents can rest assured that they will always have access to their documents.
Backing up personal photos is extremely important for most people today. With the increase of digital photography, many people have hundreds of pictures stored on their home computerhard drive. If something were to happen to that unit, all of the memories and photos would be destroyed. The photographer can use CDs or portable memory sticks to save all the photos they never want to live without. In addition, saving tons of pictures on the hard drive could possibly slow a system down considerably. By putting a copy of them on a disc, the original file on the system can be deleted. Thus, this will improve the speed and operation of a home computer.
Backing up music files is also another important thing for someone to do if their system is operating incorrectly. A person can burn CDs of selected songs or save music on portable memory stick as well. By doing this simple task, people will protect all of the music they have purchased through websites and iTunes. This purchase could amount to thousands of dollars that a person is protecting by doing the backup process. In addition having files on discs also makes it easier to share music with family and friends on their computer systems.
Running regular sweeps on a home computer is also extremely important to do if it is acting incorrectly. Sometimes this sweep will identify the information that is causing a the system trouble. When this happens the problem can be corrected much easier. Also, sweeps will locate possible viruses that can be detrimental to the operation of a computerhard drive. By doing regular sweeps a person has a better chance in preventing problems from occurring in the first place.
Have you noticed that your PC starting to run slow? Does it suddenly freeze up when you open browsers or programs? Does the monitor suddenly turn black when you open some folders and end up restarting by itself.
You can solve this problem all on your own. You do not need to call a technician. With just a few simple steps, you can do this.
1. One of the biggest causes of a slow computer is having a virus on it. Most people view viruses as just destructive, but first they just slow your computer right down, as they alter and tamper with files, and then eventually do the real damage and stop your computer running properly at all and corrupt windows, until eventually windows fails to start.
Many people making the mistake of not updating their antivirus software or making sure it is enabled. Once you install it you needto run a full scan on your computer once a week and check to make sure it is enabled every day. Some malicious software will turn it off.
2. Once you have done this you need to run a check on windows to make sure there are no file errors. One of the biggest mistakes people make occurs right here and they do not know about it.
What happens is this, if you have a virus on your computer and you run this step first, it will think there is file corruption, when there is not and report vital windows files as unrecognised and try to repair them. Once this happens and you restart your computer windows will fail to start. Run the virus scan first.
To run this check you go to the windows start menu then to run and type in cmd. This will bring up a box. Type in there chkdsk /f. You will get a message asking if you want to run this on restart and type yes and then restart your PC.
3. The last and the most important step you need to take is to run a free registry scan. This will reveal all the problems that are slowing down your computer. If you are getting error messages you can fix them when you run a free registry scan. Fixing these errors just takes minutes and prevents any further problems with your PC and will make it run fast again.
In operating systems before Windows Vista, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express is easily installed. But Vista users have a problem with the installation if Internet Information Services (IIS) components are not installed. Installing SQL Server Express on your Vista machine requires enabling IIS as a prerequisite.
Step 1
Click on the "Start" button, select "Settings," then choose "Control Panel."
Step 2
Double click the "Program and Features" icon in the "Control Panel." This opens a window with a list of installed programs.
Step 3
Check all options under the "World Wide Web Services" directory.
Step 4
Click "OK." After clicking the button, the features will install on your computer. This might take several minutes.
Step 5
Double click the executable to install Microsoft SQL Express. SQL Server Express is a free program offered by Microsoft. The location of the executable is found at microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express.aspx.
Step 6
Click "OK" at the default screen. When the install application opens, the defaults are sufficient for most computer applications.
Step 7
Click "Finish." After the program has installed, a summary is shown and it can be opened in Vista.
First, click Start then My Computer then right click on the CD/DVD drive icon and click Properties in the drop down menu that appears.
Now select the AutoPlay tab.
Click the Select an item from the drop down list at the top and then for the Action to perform, select the action you wish to associate with autorun. Do this for each item in the drop down list at the top. Now click OK to save the new settings.
As an alternative approach to the procedure above, click Start then Run and type regedit in the Run box and then press Enter.
Next, in the registry editor, click to navigate to the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom and then click on the Cdrom key.
Now, find the Autorun entry in the list of parameters to the right and double click on it and then change the value (it's a dword value) of "AutoRun" parameter from "0" to "1" and click Ok.
Now click the red "X" in the upper right corner of the registry editor to exit the editor and then reboot the computer.
Next, test the setting by placing a disk in the CD/DVD drive - it should autorun start after a few seconds.
Step 1, Go to www.download.com in search type "aso", download winaso registry optimizer. Run the installer with the default options. If you have the extra money I would purchase this program, as it is reasonable at around $30. If you don't want to buy it that's fine also, however you will be using it longer as it only fixes 10 errors at a time for free.
Step 2, Click on select the areas to be scanned. Select only the first checkbox, when that section is complete, the next. Omit this step if you have purchased the program. When the scan is done each time remove all errors, repeat till all are removed. After that do one more scan with all boxes selected, make sure all errors are removed.
Step 3, The next couple things you can do with this wonderful program are system optimizer, and registry defrag. They are both self-explainitory and will make your computer even faster. Thanks for reading hope this helped you, and please check out my other articles for more hot tips!
An aggressive TV ad campaign from Verizon Wireless is adding to the support building for a software package from Google Inc. that is shaping up to be the most formidable challenge yet to Apple Inc.'s iPhone.
The commercials for the "Droid" phone, being made by Motorola Inc., list features that the iPhone lacks, such as a physical keyboard and the ability to run applications simultaneously. It ends with the tag line "Everything iDon't. Droid does."
It's not the first ad from a wireless carrier to take aim at the iPhone's weaknesses. Notably, Sprint Nextel Corp.'s ads for the Samsung Instinct and the Palm Pre have compared these devices to the iPhone. But the Verizon ads come at a sensitive time for the iPhone, as user frustration with the network of the sole U.S. iPhone carrier, AT&T Inc., is growing.
Verizon Wireless gets high marks for its network quality, but it has lacked a "smart" phone that can match the iPhone's ease of use and breadth of third-party applications. The touch-screen BlackBerry Storm, which launched last year, is the closest Verizon has come, but the first Storm got lukewarm reviews and was plagued by software problems.
The Droid will run Google's Android software, which is gathering momentum as a platform for a range of manufacturers, in contrast to the Apple-only model of the iPhone.
T-Mobile USA and Sprint already have Android phones. With Verizon, the largest U.S. carrier, now on board, the free software package becomes more attractive to software developers who want to reach the widest possible audience for their applications. A wealth of applications, in turn, helps attract customers to a phone.
The ads don't show the phone or reveal a price or a launch date more specific than "November." But the home page for the ad campaign, http://www.droiddoes.com, sends viewers to another site that has "Motorola" in the address. And two weeks ago Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam posed for an Associated Press photographer with an Android phone carrying the Motorola and Verizon brands.
(At the same event, the photographer captured what appeared to be a version of HTC Corp.'s Hero phone. It is expected to be the second Android phone Verizon Wireless releases. It's already available from Sprint and T-Mobile, and is more like the iPhone, lacking the slide-out keyboard of the Motorola model.)
McAdam said at the event that Verizon Wireless was putting "substantial resources" into developing and selling Android phones — an unusual initiative for a carrier that has previously relied mainly on manufacturers to supply it with competitive devices. It's not clear how much Verizon is spending on the Droid ad campaign, however.
The campaign is an important endorsement for Motorola, which started using the Android software as part of a turnaround effort. The cell phone maker is struggling to recover from a multiyear drop in sales. Motorola started selling its first Android phone, the Cliq, on Monday through T-Mobile USA. Motorola has previously made smart phones using Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Mobile software, but these haven't been big sellers.
Motorola shares rose 62 cents, or 7.9 percent, to $8.47 in Monday afternoon trading. Shares of Verizon Communications Inc., which owns Verizon Wireless along with Vodafone Group PLC of Britain, were unchanged at $28.90.
The heavy anti-iPhone message of the ads shouldn't be taken as a sign that Verizon Wireless won't eventually carry the iPhone. Having a viable alternative to the iPhone could strengthen Verizon's hand in negotiations with Apple.
The terms of the exclusivity agreement between Apple and AT&T are secret, but there has been speculation that it could end next year. However, the current version of the iPhone doesn't work fully on any national U.S. network expect AT&T's, so Apple would need to produce new versions of the phone for Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint.
Sticking to one carrier doesn't appear to be Apple's long-term goal. In several countries, there are multiple iPhone carriers. Canada will soon have three, for example.
A prediction two years ago by IT security solutions firm Kaspersky Lab on the possible use of YouTube as a medium for disseminating spam has finally been fulfilled.
Kaspersky Lab reported it has detected the mass mailing of unsolicited messages that include links to video advertisements on the popular video hosting site.
However, this is the first time the company's specialists have detected a mass mailing specifically intended to make users view an advertising video.
Kaspersky Lab's Content Filtering Research group recorded a mass mailing that contained a link directing users to a video advert on YouTube. There were several message variations in the mass mailing, but they all included the same link to YouTube. (See also "Straight to the Spam Filter: Astonishing E-Mail Messages You'll Never Open.")
Due to its worldwide popularity, YouTube is a potentially attractive resource for distributing spam, Kaspersky Lab said.
"Naturally, this type of advertising is more interesting and gets more hits," said Darya Gudkova, head of content analysis and research at Kaspersky Lab. "Two years ago, spammers used the YouTube name and the promise of interesting videos to lure users to advertising sites. Now the links really do lead to this popular video hosting site which is being used to store unsolicited advertising content."
Yet Gudkova noted this is not the first time a creative approach has been used by spammers this year. Last April, messages were detected that contained nonstandard, complex images advertising spammer services. Noise techniques have also been applied to graphical files, causing problems for spam filters.
Kaspersky Lab reminded on how important it is for users to keep spam filters turned on in order to block unwanted or potentially hazardous correspondence. The spam filter training option in the company's products should also be utilized to constantly improve protection against all types of unsolicited mass mailings.
The Sony PSP Go launched on Thursday, and judging by the early reviews opinions are mixed. On the one hand, you have a slick, more portable device with a crisp screen and new game formats. But legacy PSP owners will be dogged with some crossover issues, and most Sony PSP Go content is available through only one retail source. PC World's Matt Peckham will be handing down his own impressions of the device soon, but here are some early impressions to whet your appetite:
PSP Go
The PSP Go is a sleek-looking device, which is 16 percent lighter and 35 percent smaller than its predecessor, the PSP 3000. The screen has shrunk to 3.8 inches from 4.3 inches. The Go supports Bluetooth but, most importantly, the UMD drive is gone. That means all content, including games, must be saved to the device's 16GB internal memory or a Memory Stick Micro (M2) card. The Go retails for $250, and it looks like a 16GB Memory Stick Micro card will set you back somewhere between $60 and $80.
All About Sony
If you own a big collection of UMD games for the PSP, you'll probably want to hold onto your old machine. All of those games are now stuck on your old PSP. Sony has not created a way for the old games to be read and transferred to the new UMDless PSP Go, according to Ars Technica.
On the one hand, that's to be expected when a new system comes along. But really, the PSP Go is just a refreshed system; nothing is very new about it. It has no jump ahead in graphics, no new gaming capabilities, and no substantial new features other than Bluetooth connectivity. So why not create a mechanism to transfer games?
Games aren't the only legacy problem, either. The PSP Go now has a proprietary mini-USB cable, which means any old cable just won't do. The new cable is included with the device, of course, but if you lose or break that cable a new one will set you back at least fifteen bucks. That may not be the biggest deal in the world, but it's just one more hassle that doesn't need to be there. Then there's the memory stick. The Pro duo format is gone, so transferring your old data from a legacy PSP to the new Go has to be done through a PC or PS3. Again not a big deal, but it is another hassle.
Go Games
Instead of buying games from your local video game shop, all PSP Go games must be purchased online from Sony's PlayStation Store. Early reviews are complaining about the download speeds when you buy a new game from Sony. The average time seems to be at least an hour if not two to download a title directly to the Go. The problem may be the fact that the PSP Go's wireless connectivity is 802.11b. Why Sony didn't go with faster choices like 802.11g or the newly approved 802.11n connectivity is puzzling. Another downside: no background downloads. If you're downloading a game to the Go, the device will be busy for a few hours. The alternative is to download games to your PC or PS3 and then transfer them later on.
PSP Go Feel
Reviews are mixed about how the PSP Go feels in your hands. Both CNET and Ars Technica are complaining about the positioning of the controls, but reviewers for London's Guardian and Times both love the new placement. The new analog stick is reportedly more accurate, but it is smaller and early impressions say it takes some time to get used to.
Overall, people like the new device, but some significant problems like slow download times and a closed system could be problematic for the new system. What do you say? Are you picking up a new PSP Go to call your very own?
If you use Firefox, you may have already seen a pop-up from your browser alerting you that it is blocking the Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant and Windows Presentation Foundation add-ons. It's for good reason.
As of today, Mozilla's browser will automatically disable Microsoft's addon and plugin because of a gaping security hole that allows for drive-by-download attacks. The flaw lies in the Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in that is installed by the .NET add-on.
According to a Microsoft Security Research & Defense blog post, anyone who has applied the MS09-054 security patch (available via Windows Update) is safe from a potential attack against ths flaw, regardless of whether the attack comes via IE or the WPF plug-in. But since Microsoft automatically installed the add-on earlier this year without asking the user's permission, Redmond should be red-faced after this fiasco.
Chrome extensions let people customize the browser's behavior, and the Fittr Flickr extension from Gmail programmer Dan Pupius whips Yahoo's photo-sharing site into shape. Some people use extensions for using Delicious bookmarks, banishing ads, and filling out forms, but this is my favorite Chrome extension so far. You can also download Fittr from Download.com.
The Yahoo logo is ugly but not too bothersome in my eyes. Instead, what I like best about Fittr Flickr is its keyboard navigation options. Once the extension is installed, you can type "?" to see the options, but the two I now use a lot are "." and "," to navigate forward and backward through a person's photostream. Typing "s" will star a photo as a favorite, and in a nice Google touch harkening to the vi text editor, "/" will put your cursor in the search field.
To use Chrome extensions, though, you must be using the developer preview version of the browser, since extensions are something of a work in progress. (Click to download for Windows or Mac OS X.) I've had to restart Chrome sometimes to enable the last two extensions I tried out.
Another nice feature for pixel-peepers such as myself is the addition of an EXIF button below the photo that reveals camera, lens, and exposure details without navigating away from the photo. Nearby are direct links to the small, medium, and large version of the photos.
There are some other nice tidbits, too, involving viewing photos against a black background, comments, and other matters.
Yahoo has to make Flickr appeal to a large swath of people, most of whom probably don't care about these options. But for me, they unlock some of Flickr's potential.
Firefox users who want similar technology can try Dustin Diaz's Quickr Flickr script, which requires the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox to be installed before the script can be added. Greasemonkey fans also can use a number of scripts that will un-Yahoo the logo.
Wal-Mart Stores has waged an online book pricing war against Amazon.com, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday morning.
Wal-Mart sent the first salvo over Amazon's bow on Thursday when the retail giant announced that it would sell ten highly anticipated books for $10 on Walmart.com. Wal-Mart said Stephen King's upcoming hardcover "Under the Dome" and Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue" will be included in that grouping. Wal-Mart's prices include free shipping.
Not to be outdone, Amazon reduced prices to match Wal-Mart's pricing on all 10 titles. That was quickly followed by Wal-Mart's decision to reduce the prices on those books again to $9 late Thursday night. In response, Amazon reduced the prices of all ten titles to $9, as well. The company also reduced the books' Kindle pricing to $9. That's where the prices stand on both sites as of this writing.
Contrary to a previous report that Verizon had scrapped plans to carry the Palm Pre because of poor sales on Sprint, the carrier announced it will have the WebOS smartphone "early next year."
The news comes directly from one of the most credible sources of corporate information these days: Twitter. See the ‘tweetversation' below:
lanvuch: @VZWoffers, are u guys ever gonna get the Palm Pre/Pixi?
VZWoffers: @lanvuch We will be carrying the Palm Pre smartphone early next year.
Although seeing a launch date for the Pre from an official Verizon source is exciting news. I'm more interested in seeing Verizon's response (if there is one) to lanvuch's next question:
lanvuch: @VZWoffers, how about the iphone? will u be offering it soon?
Social networking site Facebook accounted for 15 percent of all U.K. Internet page views in September, says Hitwise.
According to research by the Web analytics firm, the social network was the second most visited site by U.K. users, the first being search engine Google.
Hitwise also said that Facebook received more page views than Google, eBay and YouTube combined.
"During September Facebook was the second most visited website in the UK after Google, but because users view a much larger number of pages per visit, Facebook is the clear leader in terms of page views," said Robin Goad, director of research.
Internet visits to Facebook in September were 82 percent up on the same period last year, and Hitwise said it is the most popular social networking site with Brits. Hitwise said Facebook accounts for almost half (49 percent) of all web visits to social networking sites.
"Although it has fallen somewhat off the media radar in favor of Twitter recently, Facebook remains far and away the most popular social networking website in the UK," added Goad.
One of the ways by which a virus can infect your PC is through USB/Pen drives. Common viruses such as ’Ravmon’ , ‘New Folder.exe’, ‘Orkut is banned’ etc are spreading through USB drives. Most anti virus programs are unable to detect them and even if they do, in most cases they are unable to delete the file, only quarantine it. Here are the things which you can do if you want to remove such viruses from your USB Drive
Whenever you plug a USB drive in your system, a window will appear similar to the one shown below
Don’t click on Ok , just choose ‘Cancel’. Open the Command Prompt by typing ‘cmd‘ in the run box. In the command prompt type the drive letter: and press enter . Now type dir /w/a and press enter.
This will display a list of the files in the pen drive. Check whether the following files are there or not
Autorun.inf
Ravmon.exe
New Folder.exe
svchost.exe
Heap41a
or any other exe file which may be suspicious.
If any of the above files are there, then probably the USB drive is infected. In command prompt type attrib -r -a -s -h *.* and press enter. This will remove the Read Only, Archive, System and hidden file attribute from all the files. Now just delete the files using the command del filename. example del Ravmon.exe. Delete all the files that are suspicious. To be on a safer side, just scan the USB drive with an anti virus program to check whether it is free of virus or not. Now remove the drive and plug it again. In most of the cases, the real culprit turns out to be the “Autorun.inf” file which mostly gets executed when someone clicks Ok in the dialog window which appears above. Thus the infections can spread
Security Tip
Disable the Autoplay feature of USB drives. If you disable the Autoplay feature of USB drives, then there are lesser chances of the virus spreading. A tool which can perform such a function is Tweak UI. Download it from here install it.
Run the program. Now you can disable the Autoplay feature of the removable drives as shown above. By following the above steps, you can keep your USB drives clean.
Following three simple steps now you can get rid of the pesky and sometimes buggy Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) notifications:
1. Reboot Windows in safe mode (hold the f8 key while booting and you will get the option to boot in safe mode) and then:
2. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and search for wgalogon folder and delete it. You should backup up the registry beforehand, in case somethiong goes wrong.
3. In your windows directory search for files wga* and delete them.
You are done!
Now reboot back normally and continue your work. Windows Genuine Advantage will not bother you anymore.
Warning: Use at your own risk. Backup everything before you do.
Rapidshare allows to download only a single file at a time with free account. If you want to download multiple files at the same time, you need to buy a premium account but now you can download multiple files from Rapidshare free account without paying anything with RapidShare Download Accelerator.
With RapidShare Download Accelerator, you can add all the files you'd like to download, and it will do all the annoying work for you. Now you can just sit back and watch your files download without paying a dime.
Window Vista has built in support for SATA and external drives, but they seem to be slow because the advanced write cache features aren’t automatically activated. With just few steps you can enable them and get a much faster response.
First you need to go to the Device Manager which you can go directly by just typing device in the start menu search box or just type in devmgmt.msc in command line.
Now open the Disk drives section and right click on your hard drive. Now click on the Policies tab and you’ll find this dialog box:
Now click the checkbox for Enable advanced performance, and you are done.
Write caching isn’t enabled by default as removing devices directly without using the “Safely remove removable device”may lose your data, so be cautious when enabling this options. But enabling this option also when speeding up performance significantly when writing to the disk.
Now select the external drive and double click it to open up the properties screen. Then just change the setting to “Optimize for performance” and hit OK to continue. You’ll have to reboot for all the settings to take effect. Next time you boot into Windows Vista you’ll see faster bootup times and better disk writing performance.
Show Hidden Files and Folders not working?..... If we selecte the radio button “Show hidden files and folders” and then press Ok.. the changes would just disappear upon opening the dialog again. It was probably some virus attack after which the Windows registry was not being updated properly. So here is what methods to restore it back. There are so many methods to restore back the registry. If one method is not working, please try another one.
Method 1:
Go to registry editor by running regedit in the run box. Go to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
In the right hand area, double click hidden and change the value to 1.
Now you’re all set to go. Check it in your tools menu if the changes have taken effect.
Method 2:
1. Click “Start” -> “Run…” (or press Windows key + R) 2. Type “regedit” and click “Ok”. 3. Find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL 4. Look at the “CheckedValue” key… This should be a DWORD key. If it isn’t, delete the key. 5. Create a new key called “CheckedValue” as a DWORD (hexadecimal) with a value of 1. 6. The “Show hidden files & folders” check box should now work normally. Enjoy!
Method 3:
1- Click Start –> Run –> regsvr32 /i browseui.dll –> enter
A confirmation message will appear like given below
2- Click Start –> Run –> regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
Wait for the confirmation and click OK.
regsvr32-shell.dll.png
Method 4:
If none of the above methods work, please download our Smart Virus Remover from here:
LG Electronics will be launching three new smartphones in the next few weeks that run on Windows software. They will be the first LG phones to feature the new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system (OS) from Microsoft. Microsoft is hoping its Windows Mobile operating system can continue to challenge Symbian, a platform backed by Nokia and used in two-thirds of smartphones, reports Reuters.
Netbooks or mini notebook devices are best known for their low cost; the majority of them are being offered at a sub $500 today. Besides, they are also low in weight. The new Nokia Booklet 3G netbook, featuring mobile broadband, a 12-hour battery, A-GPS support, sleek aluminum chassis and 10-inch glass HD ready display, may also seem like an attractive option. However, its steep $816 (Rs 40,000 approx.) price tag could drive customers away
Nokia last month announced its first netbook (would you still call it a netbook), the Nokia Booklet 3G, that will use Microsoft's Windows operating system. Powered by Intel's Atom processor, the Nokia Booklet 3G weighs 1.25 kilograms, measures slightly more than two centimetres thin, and offers 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD and a broad range of connectivity options -- including 3G/HSPA and Wi-Fi.
Analysts say the Booklet 3G is too high for the general market.
Obviously, consumers have taken to netbooks in a big way, and they may fall in love with the look of the Booklet 3G. But when they see the Nokia's price tag, they'll opt for a more pedestrian Acer, Asus, HP or Samsung netbook, all of which are priced between $350 and $500, says PC World.
It also says, "Naturally, wireless carrier subsidises will whittle down the Booklet's price, but Nokia's netbook will likely still cost more than competing mini-notes. Even if it runs $400 to $500 with a two-year mobile broadband contact, other subsidised portables will go for less than $200. In fact, some carriers like Verizon have begun offering free netbooks to new subscribers."
Nokia may have to make significant changes to the Booklet 3G functionality, or the price, or both, to make a dent in the netbook market.

Surprise! Facebook has acquired FriendFeed, a Bay Area-based social-network feed aggregation start-up.
“Facebook and FriendFeed share a common vision of giving people tools to share and connect with their friends,” FriendFeed co-founder Bret Taylor said in a release. “We can’t wait to join the team and bring many of the innovations we’ve developed at FriendFeed to Facebook’s 250 million users around the world.”
TechCrunch reported the news on Monday, a matter of minutes before Facebook confirmed the acquisition.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say it: This is not as ridiculously huge of a deal as the Silicon Valley hype machine is going to have you believe.
Basically, FriendFeed has been coasting on a lot of hype and not a lot of mainstream recognition, and it’s not a bit surprising that it would be seeking an exit at this point. Facebook acquired it for its talent; prior to FriendFeed, Taylor was part of the team that helped launch Google Maps. So the real story here is that Facebook made the rather expensive hire (and we don’t know the terms of the deal) of some very talented former Googlers. FriendFeed’s co-founders “will hold senior roles on Facebook’s engineering and product teams,” according to the release, and the rest of the company’s 12 employees will also join Facebook.
This would also be consistent with Facebook’s minimal past acquisition history: the company bought little-known start-up Parakey two years ago with the primary objective of getting its founders, the creators of the Firefox browser, on board. It’s also well-known that Facebook tried hard to acquire Twitter–which would’ve been a far more significant acquisition than FriendFeed–and was turned down. (Well, there was also ConnectU, whose assets Facebook acquired pretty much just to get that pesky lawsuit off the table.)
The release from Facebook repeatedly hinted that this is about talent more than product.
“Since I first tried FriendFeed, I’ve admired their team for creating such a simple and elegant service for people to share information,” Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the statement. “As this shows, our culture continues to make Facebook a place where the best engineers come to build things quickly that lots of people will use.”
Yup.
“As we spent time with Mark (Zuckerberg) and his leadership team, we were impressed by the open, creative culture they’ve built, and their desire to have us contribute to it,” FriendFeed co-founder Paul Buchheit, another ex-Googler who was instrumental in building Gmail, “It was immediately obvious to us how passionate Facebook’s engineers are about creating simple, groundbreaking ways for people to share, and we are extremely excited to join such a like-minded group.”
But Facebook director of product Christopher Cox said to CNET News later, “I wouldn’t call it a talent acquisition.” He elaborated, “We really have a vision that’s focusing on Facebook being not just a destination but being a service…We think FriendFeed’s been focused on how that’s going to work in an open way, and that’s something we’re excited about, not just the people but the product they’ve built.”
FriendFeed earned praise from prominent voices in Silicon Valley–most notably Robert Scoble–but its aim to aggregate all of a user’s social-networking activity feeds in one place didn’t catch on with the mainstream. But Facebook eventually began to mimic the FriendFeed model through upgrades to its central “news feed” feature, letting members pull in select third-party updates.
Bret Taylor said that FriendFeed wasn’t shopping itself around. “We weren’t up for sale. We had a healthy amount of financing and a really efficient company,” he told CNET News. “As we noticed our products were really converging in terms of product vision, we started having casual conversations with Facebook.”
It’s not clear what will happen to the FriendFeed service, because it sure sounds like Facebook is eager to get its team onto the engineering fast track. “FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being,” a post by Taylor on the FriendFeed blog read. “We’re still figuring out our longer-term plans for the product with the Facebook team.”
Taylor elaborated more to CNET News later on Monday: “Anything that we would do would be more of a transition, not shutting down. I think our users have invested in our product by putting their data in it, sharing it with their friends…We absolutely wouldn’t shut (FriendFeed) down.”
Palm Inc has escalated its battle with rival Apple Inc, updating the software on its Pre smartphone so that it can again sync with Apple’s iTunes media management software. Palm’s move comes after Apple earlier this month closed a loophole in iTunes that had allowed it to sync with Pre. ITunes is designed to work with Apple’s iPod and iPhone products. Palm, whose Pre smartphone was released in June to good reviews and reports of strong early sales, said on Thursday it has released an update to its WebOS software that again allows the Pre to sync with iTunes.
In a blog post announcing the new update, Palm wrote: “Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That’s right – you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).” Apple was not immediately available for comment.
Introduction More and more employers and universities are becoming aware of the amount of time their employees or students are spending using the Internet for personal reasons. Obviously employers want to discourage this behavior and may implement a number of different ways to do so. These can include;
* Restricting people from installing programs on their workstation. This usually won't stop someone from accessing websites, but it may keep people from playing games or using instant messaging software. * Using a firewall or proxy server to restrict access to websites or other Internet protocols. All your Internet communication passes through your network's firewall, so it's a great place to monitor and restrict access. How complex or restrictive it is largely depends how tech savvy your IT department is. * Using a network monitoring system to "spy" on Internet access. This is a form of firewall monitoring, where your employer can intercept and read/save anything flowing through their firewall. Your IT department may call this an Intrusion Detection System, which is primarily used to monitor for attempted hacker attacks or viruses. * Installing programs on workstations that monitor Internet access. This is probably the toughest thing to get around because there are so many different vendors that offer this type of software. In addition, there is software that simply records every keystroke you press. In most cases, there's no way around this other than disabling the software.
This guide discusses a way an employee or student can securely access the Internet while at work or school, and also get around some common firewall restrictions that prevent you from using most networked programs. My definition of "securely" means that there should be no mean by which your employer can know which websites you have visited or are currently visiting, and can not view or decipher the content of those sites (without actually standing over your shoulder.)
Keep in mind that the method I discuss here will protected you from NETWORK monitoring, not actual computer or keystroke monitoring. So if your IT department has some security software installed on your PC, you probably shouldn't even be looking at this page.
In addition to protecting you from network monitoring, this method can be used to get around a number of other security protections that may be in place;
* Your employer or school allows access to most of the Internet but blocks certain websites that they consider non-work related. Using this method you can access them. * Your employer or school blocks you from chatting at work using AIM or ICQ or similar instant messaging programs. Follow my instructions and you may be able to get around the firewall and chat at work. * You want to access your employer or school's Intranet from home. Setup the shunnel in the reverse order as I describe, with the SSH server on your work computer, and Putty at home. You'll may be able to access Intranet websites from home just like you were sitting at your work computer.
This is version 2 of the Surf At Work guide. This version details how to encrypt your network traffic using an SSH tunnel with Dynamic Forwarding. Version 1 of the guide was similar, but in addition to SSH used an Apache HTTP Proxy server. The addition of Dynamic Forwarding in Putty removed the need for an external proxy server, assuming your applications can use a SOCKS proxy instead of an HTTP proxy.
Using this method will actually allow you to do more than just surf the web privately. You can bypass a firewall and encrypt the network traffic of any program that can use SOCKS proxy. This includes most instant messaging software like AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, IRC, mIRC and others.
As MySpace.com is now so popular, many schools now comletely block MySpace to keep kids from socialzing online and to sidestep any controversy. Since MySpace is just a website like any other, this method should let you access MySpace freely around most firewalls.
Overview The objective is to encrypt your network traffic so it can not be read as it passes through over employer or school's network. To do this, we will;
* Run an SSH server on your computer at home. * Use an SSH client on your computer at work to create a secure tunnel between your home and work computers. * Enable Dynamic Forwarding in the SSH client to simulate a SOCKS Proxy. * Configure Internet Explorer to use a SOCKS Proxy for network traffic instead of connecting directly.
After this is all setup, the process for browsing a website will be as follows. Internet Explorer at work connects to the SSH client running on your computer at work. The SSH client connects to the SSH server running on your computer at home. Internet Exlorer will make requests for websites using the SOCKS protocol, which SSH will intercept and handle for you. Thus, the SSH server talks to the website and returns the web page to the SSH client. The SSH client returns the web page to Internet Explorer.
In essence, you are tricking Internet Explorer into thinking you have a proxy server running on your local machine, when in fact the proxy is running on your computer at home. Since all communication over your work network takes place through SSH, it can not be read. The SSH traffic CAN be seen or detected, but it will look like a garbled mess of letters and numbers. Other than being a little slower than usual, you shouldn't notice any difference when surfing the web when using the secure method.
Some people that are familiar with SSH and may be asking, "How can Internet Explorer talk to SSH?". Well, SSH has a great little function called Connection Forwarding. You setup SSH to accept TCP connections on a port and forward them to a port on another computer. SSH takes ALL the network traffic on that port, wraps it in a secure package, and forwards it somewhere else. I refer to this as a "shunnel"; a secure tunnel.
The other trick to this setup is the Dynamic Port Forwarding. Newer versions of SSH can emulate a SOCKS proxy server. A SOCKS Proxy server is a server that acts like a "middleman." It accepts requests from a client, and connects to the target server on your behalf. Take a look at these links on Webopedia for a little more information;SOCKSProxy
Audience This guide is written for a moderately skilled computer user. You MUST know how to install programs on your computer, how to navigate file systems, and how to edit configuration files. A knowledge of "how the Internet works", like TCP, sockets, ports, HTTP, and other network protocols would be extremely helpful.
Prerequisites To use this method, you need the following;
* A decent computer at home that you can leave connected to the Internet all day while you're at work. * A fast Internet connection at home; usually cable or DSL. (Technically, this can work with a dialup modem connection, but it may cause problems and it's really slow.) * Microsoft Windows NT, 2000, or XP installed on your computer at home and any flavor of Windows on your computer at work. You may be able to get this to work with 95, 98, or ME, but I can't say for sure. You definitely can get this to work with Linux or Unix. I don't know about Macintosh.
Alternatively, if you don't meet the prereqs or don't want to leave your computer on all day, you can try HTTP-Tunnel, a commerical alternative that lets you do everything here and more.
When won't this work? Please notice the title of this page starts "How To Bypass Most Firewall Restrictions... I say most because the method I describe here will not work for everyone, even if you meet the pre-requisites above. If any of the following are true for you, you probably can't use this method successfully;
* You can not access any external Internet websites; only internal websites or none at all. * You can access a few specific Internet websites, but no others at all.
If either of the 2 lines above apply to you, your network administrator is working hard because they are using a "pessimistic" blocking strategy. In other words, they have decided to block everything, and probably only allow specific access. The problem with that strategy however, is that it requires much more work and maintenance than using an "optimistic" strategy, in which they allow access to everything and block only certain "things".
The method I describe on this page will not work with a pessimistic blocking strategy because it depends on being able to access your home computer from work. 9 times of 10, if you can't get to www.amazon.com, you won't be able to your home computer either. If for some reason you CAN access your home computer, then great.. proceed If not, you may want to talk to your network administrator. Ask him if they would punch a hole in the firewall so you can SSH to your computer at home. Or come up with some excuse to get access to 1 port on your home computer, then run the SSH server on that port.
Or... maybe you ARE the network administrator and are just curious about how this works. :)
Addresses Before we start installing and configuring software, you need to find out the following things;
* Your home IP Address * Your work/school external IP Address
The easiest way to get your IP Addresses is to go to www.whatismyip.com at home and at work. Write down the numbers.
Software We're going to be using 2 fairly simple pieces of software; an SSH Server and an SSH Client.
There are a few flavors of SSH Server's out there, but we're going to be using OpenSSH because it's free. The website for OpenSSH is http://www.openssh.com . But wait! OpenSSH doesn't run on Windows unfortunately... But there is a site that converted OpenSSH to run on Windows, which is what we want! http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/ .
Download OpenSSH for Windows from http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net . The version I wrote this document using was 3.7.1p1-1. The latest version should work for you, plus it will have less security holes.
For the SSH Client I recommend using Putty. Putty is a small single executable SSH client with the ability to setup a tunnel. The newer version also support Dynamic Forwarding, which is essential. It's possible to use OpenSSH as your client as well as your server, but Putty is much easier to setup and use. Download putty.exe from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html .
Install the SSH Server The OpenSSH installer comes in a zip file. Unzip the file, then run setupssh.exe. Choose to install both the Client and the Server. It will ask you to install into C:\Program Files\OpenSSH. If you choose to install into a different location, that fine, but be aware I will use the above path in this document.
Configure Windows OpenSSH for Windows uses Windows' user database for login authentication. That mean you must have a User name and Password setup to login to your home computer. If you don't, you have 2 choices. 1, set a password on your Windows account, or 2, create a new local account that you will use to login from SSH. I know a lot of people out there don't use logins or passwords on their home computer, but if you're using NT, 2000, or XP, the functionality is there, even if you don't use it.
There are many different flavors of Windows, with different methods of creating a local user. There's no way I can cover all of them, but here are a few examples;
To create a new account on your home machine (Windows XP):
* Start Menu, open Control Panel, then User Accounts. * Click Advanced tab, then the Advanced button. * Highlight Users, then click Actions, then New User. * Enter a User name, and a Password twice. I recommend you use a User name and Password that is different than anything you have ever used at work. Obviously, your employer probably knows your password, so there's no security if you use the same password at home. * Deselect User must change password at next logon. * Check Password never expires. * Click Create. * Close the Windows, close Control Panel.
You should now have a new local Windows user on your home machine. Remember the Login name and password for later.
Configure the SSH Server We want to configure your SSH server to allow access using User name and Passwords, and to listen on port 443 instead of port 22.
Why port 443 instead of port 22? In most cases your employer will block almost all outgoing network ports except for port 80 and port 443, which are the 2 ports that webservers run on. I used to tell people to run SSH on port 80 because that's the standard webserver port, but now I recommend you run it on 443. Port 443 is used for encrypted websites, which is what your shunnel traffic will look like as it passes through the firewall. If you have trouble on port 443, try it on port 80 instead. If neither work, you're probably out of luck.
Open Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\OpenSSH\etc. Open the file sshd_config using Wordpad. (That's sshd_config not ssh_config!)
Change the line
#Port 22
to
Port 443
Save the file.
Now open a command prompt. Change to C:\Program Files\OpenSSH\bin. We are going to create a user and group database from your Windows user database. Type the following;
mkgroup -l > ..\etc\group
Then
mkpasswd -l > ..\etc\passwd
These 2 commands will create group and password files at C:\Program File\OpenSSH\etc
Start/Stoping the SSH Server On your home computer, open a command prompt. To start your SSH server, type the following:
net start opensshd
To stop your SSH server, type the following:
net stop opensshd
To make it easy, you can create a .bat file that will this command. If you make a shortcut to the .bat file in your Windows Startup program group, then when you turn on your home computer in the morning, the servers will startup automatically, and be ready for you when you get to work.
If you have a wired or wireless router at home (Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc) Some routers call it port forwarding and others call it virtual servers, but the setup is very similar no matter what brand you use. You will need to configure your router to route port 443 to the computer where you're running the SSH server. I not going to go into details, but there is usually a browser based interface directly to the router, which will have a page to setup virtual servers. Configure it to forward port 443 to your SSH server computer, port 443.
Setup Putty at Work/School Copy putty.exe to somewhere on your hard drive at work. c:\ will do fine, or anywhere else you want. Your desktop is convenient but kind of obvious. If you don't have permissions to write files to your hard drive, just copy putty.exe and shunnel.bat to a floppy disk or burn them onto a CD. Take the disk to work and run Putty from the appropriate drive.
Open Notepad and copy the following into it, change the bold part where necessary;
putty -D 8080 -P 443 -ssh homeIP
* homeIP should be the IP address of your home machine that you wrote down in the Addresses section above.
Save the file as shunnel.bat in the same directory that you saved putty.exe.
Note for advanced users: If your computer at work is already configured to use a proxy server, you need to configure Putty a little differently, but this may still work.
Open Putty in graphical mode, input your connection setting, and also copy the proxy settings from Internet Explorer to Putty's proxy configuration screen. Putty should now create a secure tunnel through the proxy at work to your computer at home... pretty neat trick.
Create your tunnel At work, simply double click shunnel.bat to initiate the shunnel. A Putty window will popup asking for a login name and password. Type the user name and password you created above on the Windows account. If it works, you will be presented with a DOS prompt waiting for a command. This is actually a command prompt to your HOME machine. You can use it if you want, but as long as this command prompt is open, your tunnel is alive. To close the tunnel, type exit or close the window.
For Advanced Users If you are very familiar with SSH and know what you are doing, you can set this up so you don't have to enter a password each time you create the shunnel. You have to install OpenSSH as your SSH client and then setup key based authentication by creating a public and private key on your work computer. Install the public key on the SSH server on your home computer. Thanks to Robert W. for this suggestion. I may go into more detail on how do set this up in the future.
Configure Internet Explorer Now we have to configure Internet Explorer at work to use a SOCKS proxy server.
First, at school/work, go to http://www.whatismyip.com . Write down the number. This is your IP address WITHOUT your shunnel enabled.
In Internet Explorer;
* Open the Tools menu, then click Internet Options. * Click the Connections tab, then click LAN Settings. * Check "Use a proxy server ...", then click the Advanced button. * If "Use the same proxy for all protocols" is checked, uncheck it. * Delete anything from the "Proxy address to use" and "Port" boxes. * On the Socks line, enter "127.0.0.1" for the address, and "8080" for the Port. * Click OK a couple times, then close Internet Explorer and restart it.
First go to http://www.whatismyip.com again. If everything worked correctly, the page should have changed to show your HOME IP address, NOT your work IP address. If it shows your home IP Address, congratulation, your surfing the web securely and privately from work.
If your intent is to access MySpace, and MySpace was blocked before, try it now.
Configuring other applications to use the private connection Most applications that access the Internet can be configure to use the shunnel. For it to work, they have to support a SOCKS 4 or SOCKS 5 proxy connection. Instant messaging programs like AIM, ICQ, Yahoo IM, and mIRC all support this.
Setup is different for all application, but the settings will be the same. You want to configure the application to use a SOCKS 4 or SOCKS 5 proxy server, Host should be 127.0.0.1, and Port should be 8080.
Protect yourself from someone looking over your shoulder Here's a great application that fits in perfectly with the theme of this page. It's called Ghostzilla web, but have it look like you are doing normal work to people walking by your computer. Ghostzilla is a browser that hides itself in your normal work applications, like Excel, or Word, or Visual Studio... anything. With a swish of the mouse, Ghostzilla pops up and you can surf the web. If you see someone coming, simply move the mouse away, and it disappears, leaving no trace. Plus, you can easily configure it to use the shunnel as described here, for total privacy!
A Simpler Solution Buzzsurf has teamed up with HTTP-Tunnel Corp to encourage users to try the HTTP-Tunnel Client as a simplier alterntive to the procedure described here. Using HTTP-Tunnel , you don't need a computer at home to leave turned on all day. And you don't need to know how to install SSH or Putty. All the network communication is encrypted and sent over standard webserver ports, just like I describe, so it offers just as much protection without the hassle. Try it for free at HTTP-Tunnel.com.
